The foundations
Everything starts here: the two key verbs, articles, and the present tense. Get these automatic and the rest builds quickly.
être & avoir (to be / to have)
The two most important verbs. Memorise both fully — they power negation, questions and every compound past tense.
- Je suis étudiant.I am a student.
- Elle a vingt ans.She is twenty (lit. has 20 years).
Articles & gender
Every noun is masculine or feminine. Learn the article WITH the noun: le/la/les (the), un/une/des (a/some).
- le livre, la table, les amisthe book, the table, the friends
- un café, une pomme, des fleursa coffee, an apple, some flowers
Present tense (-er verbs)
Regular -er verbs follow one ending pattern: -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent.
- Je parle, nous parlonsI speak, we speak
Common mistakes that cost points
Age uses avoir (to have), not être (to be).
femme is feminine — gender must match the article.
