Tips to remember & rules
- 1Three families: -ER (parler), -IR (finir), -RE (vendre). Learn one model from each and you can conjugate hundreds of verbs.
- 2Imparfait shortcut: take the nous form of the present (nous parlons), drop -ons, add -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
- 3Futur & conditionnel share a stem — the full infinitive (for -RE verbs, drop the final -e). Futur endings: ai, as, a, ons, ez, ont. Conditionnel uses the imparfait endings.
- 4Subjunctive shortcut: take the ils form of the present (ils finissent → finiss-) and add -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent.
- 5Most verbs use avoir in the passé composé. A small group of movement/state verbs use être (arriver, rester, tomber, monter…) and the past participle agrees with the subject — elle est arrivée, ils sont arrivés.
