Classic Anglophone Errors

Les erreurs classiques des anglophones

Stop translating word for word. French expresses age, hunger and feelings with avoir, the weather with il fait, has no -ing progressive, keeps articles English drops, and refuses several English prepositions. Each error has a fixed French pattern — learn the pattern, not the translation.

States with avoir

avoir … ans / faim / soif / froid / chaud / peur / raison / sommeil / besoin / envie. English uses “to be”, but French uses avoir.

Weather and temperature

Weather → il fait (il fait froid). A person who is cold → avoir (j’ai froid). An object that is cold → être (la soupe est froide).

No progressive; keep articles

je travaille (not “I am working”); être en train de to insist. j’aime le café (general → definite article); le lundi = on Mondays; depuis + present for ongoing actions.

Verbs and prepositions

chercher / écouter / regarder / attendre / payer take a direct object (no preposition); téléphoner needs à; reflexive + body part uses the article (je me lave les mains).

Sensations: avoir, not être

  • chercher / écouter / regarder / attendre / payer take a direct object; téléphoner needs à.
