Part A · Chapter reference (the whole chapter, condensed)
The reflexive pronoun ladder
| Subject | Reflexive pronoun | Before a vowel sound |
| je | me | m' (je m'appelle) |
| tu | te | t' (tu t'appelles) |
| il / elle / on | se | s' (il s'appelle) |
| nous | nous | nous (nous nous appelons) |
| vous | vous | vous (vous vous appelez) |
| ils / elles | se | s' (ils s'appellent) |
The rule: the pronoun always matches the subject, sits directly in front of the conjugated verb, and never changes meaning on its own — the verb itself stays exactly the same as a normal -er/-ir/-re verb once you strip the se.
se laver · se lever · s'appeler — present tense, side by side
| Subject | se laver | se lever | s'appeler |
| je | me lave | me lève | m'appelle |
| tu | te laves | te lèves | t'appelles |
| il/elle/on | se lave | se lève | s'appelle |
| nous | nous lavons | nous levons | nous appelons |
| vous | vous lavez | vous levez | vous appelez |
| ils/elles | se lavent | se lèvent | s'appellent |
Two spelling watch-outs: se lever takes an accent grave (è) everywhere except nous/vous — the same stem-change pattern as acheter. s'appeler doubles the l (appelle / appellent) everywhere except nous/vous — the same pattern as jeter.
aller / vouloir / devoir + reflexive infinitive. When a reflexive verb follows a conjugated verb like aller, vouloir, devoir, pouvoir, the second verb stays an infinitive (se laver, unconjugated) — but the reflexive pronoun still changes to match the subject of the sentence, not the infinitive's "default" se.
Je vais me laver. · Tu vas te lever. · Nous devons nous préparer. · Ils veulent se reposer.
Negation wraps both the pronoun and the verb: Je ne me lave pas. Questions use est-ce que or inversion (pronoun stays glued to the verb, subject flips after): Te réveilles-tu tôt ? Reciprocal meaning (each other) uses the plural forms: Nous nous aimons. Ils se parlent. Commands: affirmative moves the pronoun after the verb with a hyphen and te → toi (Lève-toi !); negative keeps the normal order (Ne te lève pas !).
Part B · Student handout (one-page cheat sheet)
REFLEXIVE SENTENCE = [ Subject ] + [ me/te/se/nous/vous/se ] + [ Conjugated verb ] + [ Complement ]
| Pronoun placement | right before the conjugated verb — je me lave |
| Negation | ne + pronoun + verb + pas — je ne me lave pas |
| + aller/vouloir/devoir | pronoun matches the real subject, verb stays infinitive — tu vas te laver |
| Question (inversion) | pronoun stays with verb, subject flips after — te lèves-tu ? |
| Affirmative command | pronoun after the verb, hyphen, te → toi — lève-toi ! |
5 sentences to master by heart:
- Je m'appelle Priya et je me lève à six heures.
- Nous nous lavons les mains avant de manger.
- Elle ne se sent pas bien aujourd'hui.
- Est-ce que vous vous couchez tôt le dimanche ?
- Dépêche-toi, le bus arrive dans cinq minutes !
Before you submit — check: ① pronoun matches the subject? ② pronoun right before the conjugated verb? ③ negation wraps pronoun + verb? ④ with aller/vouloir/devoir, did the pronoun still change? ⑤ command: pronoun after, hyphenated, toi not te?

Part E · Homework & self-correction
Homework (≈ 30 min)
- Finish the 100 practice questions above; self-check with Part D; log every miss.
- On the module, reach 42/50+ on the 50-question quiz (Practice mode first, then Exam mode).
- Write 8 sentences about your daily routine — use at least 4 different reflexive verbs, one negative, and one question.
- Record the 8 sentences aloud and submit the audio.
Self-correction checklist (run before submitting)
- Every reflexive pronoun matches its subject (me/te/se/nous/vous/se).
- The pronoun sits directly before the conjugated verb (or before the infinitive after aller/vouloir/devoir).
- Negation wraps the pronoun and the verb together: ne + pronoun + verb + pas.
- In a command, the pronoun moves after the verb, hyphenated, and te becomes toi.
- I did not confuse reflexive (myself) with reciprocal (each other) when the sentence needed the plural nous/vous/ils/elles form.
