Articles & Gender — the small words that carry big penalties

  • Your sentences are correct (Ch1) and connected (Ch2).
  • Now the little words inside them: le, la, les, un, une, des, du, de la.
  • English and Hindi drop these words and guess gender — but in French every noun has a gender, every noun needs an article, and every mistake is counted.
  • This chapter makes the whole system automatic.

Why articles & gender decide your accuracy score

  • Articles are the most frequent words in French — you write dozens per paragraph.
  • Each one carries a gender and a number, and each wrong or missing one is a counted error.
  • Fixing this system is the single biggest accuracy gain available to an English/Hindi speaker.
🔑The core truth: in French, a noun almost never appears "naked." It comes with an article that matches its gender (m/f) and number (sing/pl). Learn each noun with its article and half the battle is won.

The whole article system at a glance

Définite — "the"Indéfinite — "a / some"Partitif — "some"
masculinle le livreun un livredu du pain
fémininla la tableune une tablede la de la eau→de l'
+ voyellel' l'ami·l'eauun / une un amide l' de l'eau
plurielles les livresdes des livresdes des fruits

Don't memorise this cold — the next five tabs teach each column. Keep this grid as your map.

The three jobs an article does

Définite · le/la/les
"the" — or a whole categoryle chat · j'aime le café (in general)
Indéfinite · un/une/des
"a / an / some" (countable)un chat · des chats
Partitif · du/de la
"some" (uncountable amount)du pain · de la patience

Why weak students lose marks here

  • Dropped articles. English/Hindi say "I like music"; French needs J'aime la musique.
  • Wrong gender. une problème → un problème — and the gender error spreads to every adjective.
  • Missed contractions. à le parc → au parc; de le → du.
  • The "de" rules. After a negative and after quantity, articles collapse to de — often forgotten.
  • Agreement. The adjective must match the noun's gender and number: une voiture rouge, des voitures rouges.
🧭
  • How to study this chapter. Tab 1 fixes gender (everything depends on it).
  • Tabs 2–4 teach the three article types; Tab 5 does plurals and adjective agreement.
  • Tab 6 is your "which article?" decision guide.
  • Tabs 7–13 are practice: article lab, 300+ drills, timed writing, a mock, and a quiz.
  • One tab per sitting.
Your goal by the end

Write a paragraph in which every noun has the correct article (right gender, number, contraction, and "de" where required) and every adjective agrees — with zero dropped articles and zero gender errors.

1 · Noun gender — the foundation of everything

  • Every French noun is masculine or feminine — not just people, but objects and ideas too.
  • Gender controls the article and every adjective attached to the noun, so a wrong gender creates a chain of errors.
  • There's no perfect rule, but there are strong clues and one golden habit.
🥇The golden habit: never learn a noun alone — learn it with its article. Store une table, not table; un problème, not problème. The article is part of the word.

Ending clues — usually masculine

-age le voyage-ment le moment-eau le bureau-isme le tourisme-eur le bonheur-ier le quartier-oir le soir-in le vin

Ending clues — usually feminine

-tion la nation-sion la décision-té la liberté-ette la baguette-ance la chance-ence la patience-ure la nature-ie la vie-elle la vaisselle

High-frequency traps (memorise these)

le problèmemasc despite -ela pagefem
le muséemasc (-ée exception)la photofem (short for photographie)
le systèmemascl'eaufem

People & jobs — often two forms

un étudiant → une étudianteadd -e for feminine
un serveur → une serveuse-eur → -euse
un acteur → une actrice-teur → -trice
un ami → une amiethe article shows gender before a vowel

Countries & cities

Countries have gender: le Canada, le Japon (m) · la France, la Chine (f) · les États-Unis (pl). Most countries ending in -e are feminine (except le Mexique). This matters for prepositions later (au Canada, en France).

Going deeper — the clues are ~80%, not 100%
  • Endings are strong hints, not laws (e.g. le musée, la page break them).
  • Treat them as a first guess, but trust the article you learned with the word over the ending rule.
  • When unsure while writing, pick the gender you were taught and stay consistent — a consistent guess costs one mark; a gender that flips mid-paragraph looks worse.

Mini-check

le or la? (a) ___ liberté (b) ___ voyage (c) ___ décision (d) ___ moment. → (a) la (b) le (c) la (d) le.

2 · Definite articles — le · la · l' · les

The definite article means "the" — but French uses it far more than English, including for general and abstract ideas. It also merges with à and de into contractions you must not forget.

The four forms

masculin
le livrethe book
féminin
la tablethe table
+ voyelle / h muet
l'ami · l'hôtelle/la → l' before a vowel
pluriel
les livresthe books (m & f)

When to use "le/la/les" — three cases

  • Something specific ("the"): Le livre est sur la table.
  • A whole category / general truth (English drops it!): J'aime le café. = I like coffee (in general).
  • Abstract nouns, languages, days-in-general: La patience est importante ; j'étudie le français ; le dimanche, je me repose.
English habit (wrong)

French

J'aime la musique.general → definite article

3 · Indefinite articles — un · une · des

The indefinite article means "a / an" (singular) or "some / any" (plural) for things you can count. Two rules cause most errors: it becomes de after a negative, and jobs after être take no article at all.

The three forms

masculin
un livrea book
féminin
une tablea table
pluriel (m & f)
des livressome books
unarticle chatnoun noiradjective — des chats noirs

Rule 1 — after a negative, un/une/des → de

affirmative

J'ai une voiture.un/une/des present

negative

Je n'ai pas de voiture.un/une/des → de

Also: Il y a des problèmes → Il n'y a pas de problèmes. (This carries over from Chapter 1's NEG-DE rule.)

Rule 2 — no article for a job/role after être

Je suis étudiant.not "un étudiant"
Elle est ingénieure.profession → no article after être
but: C'est un bon professeur.with c'est, the article returns
Going deeper — « il est » vs « c'est un »
  • Two ways to identify someone, with opposite article rules. il/elle est + no article: Il est médecin. c'est + article: C'est un médecin. Use c'est un(e)… when you add an adjective or emphasis (C'est un bon médecin); use il/elle est… for the bare profession.
  • Never mix them: not Il est un médecin.
Going deeper — mon / ce replace the article
  • A noun takes one determiner slot. A possessive (mon, ma, mes, ton, son, notre…) or a demonstrative (ce, cette, ces) replaces the article — never stack them: mon livre (not le mon livre), cette ville (not la cette ville).
  • They still agree in gender/number: mon/ma/mes · ce/cette/ces.
Going deeper — des → de before an adjective + plural noun

When an adjective comes before a plural noun, des becomes de: J'ai de bons amis (not des bons amis). If the adjective comes after (normal position), des stays: des amis sympas. A refined touch — worth getting right in Section B.

✕Je n'ai pas une voiture. → Je n'ai pas de voiture.After a negative, un/une/des → de.DE-NEG

Fill / fix: (a) J'ai ___ frère et ___ sœur. (b) Je n'ai pas ___ argent. (c) Elle est ___ médecin. → (a) un frère et une sœur (b) pas d'argent (c) médecin (no article).

4 · Partitive articles — du · de la · de l' · des

The partitive means "some / an amount of" something you can't count — water, bread, money, patience. It's the article English has no word for, so it's easy to drop. Master the count vs uncount distinction and the "de" rules.

Countable vs uncountable — the key idea

Countable → un / une / des

un pain, des painsone loaf, some loaves (you can count them)

Uncountable → du / de la / de l'

du pain, de l'eausome bread, some water (an amount)

The four forms

masculin

féminin

de l'eausome water
pluriel
des fruitssome fruit(s)

Je bois de l'eau.some water

The "de" rules — partitive collapses to de

After a negativeJe mange du pain → Je ne mange pas de pain.
After a quantity wordbeaucoup de pain, un peu de lait, assez d'eau
After a measureun kilo de pommes, une bouteille d'eau, un verre de vin
Going deeper — same word, three different jobs
  • du and des look identical across systems, but the meaning differs: le livre du prof (contraction de+le = "of the"), Je mange du pain (partitive = "some").
  • Don't worry about the label — worry about the meaning: "the/of the" vs "a/some" vs "an amount of".
  • The next tab (Which article?) turns this into a quick decision.
✕Je mange pain. → Je mange du pain."some bread" needs the partitive.ART

5 · Plurals & adjective agreement

Once the article is right, the noun and its adjectives must agree in gender and number. This is a chain: article → noun → adjective all match. Get the chain and you eliminate a whole class of counted errors.

6 · Which article? — the decision guide

When you're writing and unsure, run this quick decision. Four questions get you to the right article almost every time. Keep this tab open while you draft.

The decision flow

① Is it after a negative, or after a quantity/measure word?
→ YESuse de / d'. pas de pain · beaucoup de gens · un kilo de pommes
② Am I talking about it in general / as a whole category (or abstract)?
→ YESuse the definite le/la/les. J'aime le café. La patience est utile.
③ Can I count it (one, two, some individual things)?
→ YESuse the indefinite un/une/des. un livre · des amis
④ Is it an amount of something uncountable (some X)?
→ YESuse the partitive du/de la/de l'. du pain · de l'eau · de la patience

Same noun, different article, different meaning

J'aime le café.coffee in general (definite)
Je bois un café.one cup (countable)
Je bois du café.some coffee, an amount (partitive)
Je ne bois pas de café.negative → de

an amount
du / de la / de l'Je veux du thé.

  • Fast rule of thumb. "In general" → le/la/les.
  • "A / an / some countable" → un/une/des.
  • "Some / an amount" → du/de la.
  • "Not any / a lot of" → de.
  • Check the gender, then contract with à/de if needed (au, aux, du, des).

7 · The model ladder — article-poor → exam-ready

See the same sentence climb from dropped/wrong articles to full accuracy. The rungs are the tools of this chapter. Read the why — every fix is a saved mark.

Going deeper — check articles last, on a re-read pass
  • Articles are easy to miss while drafting because your attention is on ideas.
  • So do a dedicated article pass at the end: touch every noun and ask "does it have an article? right gender? contracted? de after negative/quantity?"
  • This one pass catches most accuracy errors in Section A and B.
Mini-check

Doubt-clearing FAQ

Q. How do I guess a gender I don't know while writing?
A. Use the ending clues (Tab 1) as a first guess, then stay consistent through the paragraph. A single consistent guess costs at most one mark; a gender that flips looks worse. Build a habit of learning each new noun with its article.
Q. le café vs un café vs du café — how do I choose?
A. Coffee in general → le. One cup → un. Some/an amount → du. Not any → de. See the Tab 6 decision flow.
Q. When does an article disappear completely?
A. Mainly: a job after être (Je suis médecin), and after certain fixed prepositions (en France, en voiture). Otherwise, assume a noun needs an article.
Q. Why does « des » sometimes become « de »?
A. Three cases: after a negative (pas de), after a quantity (beaucoup de), and before an adjective that precedes a plural noun (de bons amis). Otherwise keep des.
Q. « il est professeur » or « c'est un professeur »?
A. Both are right. Il est professeur (no article) for the bare job; C'est un professeur (with article) to add an adjective or emphasis. Never Il est un professeur.
